Detailed Product Description
3M Scotch 23 | Self-Fusing Tape | EPR | Splicing Tape | Insulation
Product Description
3M Scotch 23 is a premium self-fusing ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) splicing tape, black, 30 mil/0.76 mm, supplied with a removable liner. Stretched and half-lapped, it fuses into a seamless rubber mass for primary insulation on solid-dielectric cables from 600 V up to 69 kV joints/terminations, stress-cone build-up up to 35 kV, bus-bar insulation and moisture sealing. Continuous 90°C, emergency overload 130°C; compatible with XLPE/PVC/PE/EPR/butyl solid dielectrics; ASTM D4388 Type I/II/III, RoHS, 5-year shelf life.

Applications
- MV/HV splice primary insulation: XLPE/PVC solid-dielectric joints, multi-core taps; half-lap 23 to rebuild primary insulation up to 69 kV per layer schedule.
- Cable termination insulation: indoor/outdoor terminations and transition zones over prefabricated/cold-shrink components; 23 restores primary and moisture barrier.
- Stress cone / electrical stress control: EPR self-fuse stress cone body up to 35 kV, or base layer with semi-conductive tape.
- Bus-bar/riser insulation: switchgear copper/aluminum bus joints and corners; stretch around lug bolts and OD steps.
- Moisture sealing on irregular joints: lugs, T-splices, cross-section changes and cable OD steps; void-free seamless wrap.
- Motor/transformer lead insulation: large leads primary rebuild with padding; smaller LV leads may use thinner self-amalgamating tape.
- Cable-end moisture cap: seal cut cable ends to stop moisture wicking before permanent splicing.
- Base insulation under outer wrap: 23 for primary/seal, then Super 33+/88 or rubber tape overwrap for abrasion/UV/mechanical duty.
