Product Description

• 3M 5491 is an extruded PTFE single-coat industrial tape—brown or gray by regional SKU—with a 0.13mm extruded polytetrafluoroethylene backing, total 0.17mm, one-side silicone PSA and no liner.
• Its PTFE face gives extremely low friction and non-stick performance; the silicone adhesive holds on heated rollers/plates/sealers and chemically aggressive areas from about −54 to 260°C long term.
• It is the thicker version of 5490, more wear-resistant than thin PTFE, flatter and less curl-prone than skived PTFE, suited to flat surfaces/large rollers, sticky-ink buildup, composite/metal mold release, chute/pipe chemical liners and high-temperature harness wrapping.

Features

• Extruded PTFE ultra-slick non-stick: very low friction; sticky melt, ink and resin do not build on rolls/plates/belts and clean easily—slicker than UHMW/PE, PVC and duct, flatter than skived PTFE.
• 0.17mm thicker for wear: thicker backing than 5490 (0.09mm) for longer abrasion life on flats, large rollers, sealer areas and chute liners.
• Extrusion lies flat, anti-curl: unwind resists curling; better lay-flat than 5480/5481 skived film for wide/large rollers; softer/no weave vs PTFE-glass, little diameter gain.
• Silicone for wide temp: −54 to 260°C long term for hot rolls/sealers/ovens/curing/composite cure, far above rubber/double-coat/crepe/UHMW (≤107°C); clean removal after heat.
• Chemical resistance except organics: PTFE film resists most acids/alkalis/salts for hoods/bins/pipe barriers; silicone still attacked by commercial solvents, so test full-tape solvent soak.
• Friction/noise reduction: PTFE face on rollers/plates/belts and dissimilar metal/plastic cuts squeak/machine noise; longer wear than commodity plastic/crepe film.
• General mold release: composite bonding, metal adhesive bonding and hot thermoplastic contact as non-stick liner—no daily liquid mold agent, no paper temperature limit.
• Linerless single-coat, slit-friendly: standard roll wraps/flat-lines directly; slit widths and flat die-cuts easy vs linerless thick gum and liner-type conversion tapes.

Applications

• Web/print flat-roll wrap: paper, film, foil and label wide/impression rollers wrapped flat to stop ink/coating/hot-melt buildup and improve tracking.
• Heat-seal/heat-press release: VFFS/HFFS non-contact seal surfaces, platen liners and film-path rolls against scorch; for direct seal bars prefer PTFE-glass 5451/5453.
• Coating/lamination release: coater back rolls, laminating rolls and hot-PE/rubber wide rolls to prevent resin accumulation; web/plate/belt easy-release family use.
• Sticky process plates/belts: coat-edge plates, print impression sheets, conveyor spots and mixing panels for fast adhesive/ink cleanup.
• Composite/metal mold release: prepreg compaction, composite bonding and structural-adhesive cure as non-stick liner without spray agent.
• Chutes/troughs/duct liners: plastic pellets, powders and small parts slide with less stick; chemical duct/pipe temporary non-stick liner.
• Chemical shield/temporary barrier: hoods, hoppers, small bins, pipe wrap and acid/alkali temporary panels; verify silicone under strong organics.
• High-temp harness/noise: oven/curing/motor bundling and conduit wrap; machine ways and metal/plastic rub strips to cut squeak.
