Product Description

3M 5480 is a gray thin industrial slip/release tape with a skived polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film backing and one-side pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive; total 0.09mm/3.7mil, PTFE film 0.05mm/2mil. Its PTFE surface gives extremely low friction and non-stick performance, while the silicone adhesive holds on heated rollers/plates/sealers and chemically aggressive areas from about ‑54 to 260°C long term. It is used for web/print/packaging roll-wrap, sticky-ink-buildup surfaces, composite/metal mold release, chemical shielding, high-temperature wire harness and squeak/rattle reduction. It is more conformable than extruded PTFE and thinner/softer than PTFE-glass tapes, suiting light-to-moderate roll-wrap and contour covering.

• Skived PTFE ultra-low friction/non-stick: slick release outperforms UHMW/PE, PVC and duct for sticky melt, ink, resin on rolls/plates/belts with easy cleanup.
• Silicone plus PTFE wide temp: about ‑54 to 260°C long term for hot rolls/sealers/ovens/curing versus rubber/double-coat/crepe/UHMW (≤107°C); older regional data list 204°C max, pre-heat >120°C and ventilate >204°C.
• More conformable than extruded PTFE: skived film wraps small/irregular rollers better than 5490/5491 extruded film and is thinner/softer than 5451/5453 PTFE-glass, adding little diameter.
• Silicone clean removal plus chemical barrier: removable from many surfaces with low residue; PTFE resists most acids/alkalis/salts for hoods/bins/pipe wrap, but commercial organics attack silicone—judge whole tape by adhesive.
• 0.09mm thin roll-wrap: thinner/lighter than 5481 (0.17mm) for light-moderate rolls; less buildup on print/paper/film/composite lines than heavy fluorofilm.
• Friction/noise reduction: PTFE face on moving rollers/plates/belts and dissimilar metal/plastic cuts squeak/rattle; stronger/longer wear than commodity plastic film.
• General mold release: composite bonding, metal adhesive bonding, hot thermoplastic contact as release layer—no repeated liquid mold-agent, no paper limitation at temperature.
• High-temp wire harness: silicone+PTFE bundle/wrap/marking stays at heat better than PVC electrical tape; not automatically specified as primary insulation—verify per electrical standard.

Applications

• Web/print roll-wrap: paper, film, foil and label rollers spiral-wrapped to stop ink/coating/hot-melt buildup and improve tracking.
• Packaging/heat-seal aid: VFFS/HFFS, seal-bar adjacent rolls, non-contact seal surfaces and film-path rolls; for heavy seal-bar contact prefer PTFE-glass 5451/5453.
• Extrusion/laminate release: hot PE extrusion, rubber laminating and composite laminating rolls to prevent resin scorching; 5480 was developed for hot-PE rubber laminating rolls.
• Sticky-ink plates/belts: coaters, edge plates, conveyor spots and print impression sheets lined with PTFE for fast cleanup.
• Composite/metal mold release: prepreg compaction, composite bonding and structural-adhesive cure as non-stick liner without spray mold agent.
• Chemical shield/temporary liner: hoods, hoppers, small bins, pipe wrap and temporary corrosion barrier; verify under strong organic solvents.
• High-temp wire harness: oven/curing/motor-area bundling, conduit wrap and heat marking; treat electrical insulation separately per spec.
• Noise/wear slide parts: machine ways, metal/plastic rub points, roller ends and packaging guides with thin PTFE to cut squeak.
