Product Description

3M 850 is a single-coat polyester (PET) film industrial tape, total 1.9mil/0.05mm, with a 0.9mil/0.02mm high-strength PET backing and one-side aggressive acrylic PSA; standard roll 72yd/65.8m, linerless. It is the thin/strong/chemical-resistant/temperature-capable general industrial tape for web splicing, core starting, web-defect marking, sealing/labeling, label/panel protection, decorative edging and tape hinges. The transparent version resists chemical/solvent intrusion and protects readable labels; silver is transparent PET with a thin aluminum layer for reflective defect flagging and film splicing; red/black/white are for identification and decorative use. Long term −50 to 150°C—hotter/chemical/ powder work goes to silicone polyester (8901/8902/8402), not 850.

Features

• Thin PET, high strength, no break: total 1.9mil, backing 0.9mil, tensile 491N/100mm for splice/machine use without adding caliper or snapping; stronger than crepe/office/UPVC, cheaper than PI, no water-wrinkle vs paper.
• Acrylic long-term aging: instant plus durable bond on metal/rigid plastic/paint/paper core, stable −50 to 150°C; better heat/aging than rubber polyester variants for LSE, no flow like hot-melt.
• Chemical/solvent intrusion barrier: transparent 850 resists many solvents/chemical atmospheres for label/device/joint outer seal; more solvent-capable than kraft/cloth/UPVC, but not 204°C silicone polyester (8901/8402).
• Low caliper, machine-friendly: 0.05mm fits low-gap splicing, slitting, core start and minor web-defect flags; less stack than foam/cloth, cleaner edge than thin office film.
• Multi-color plus silver reflective: red/black/white for ID/edging; silver transparent PET + thin Al for photoelectric defect flag, decorative striping and movie-film splicing—hotter than PVC color, lighter/easier than foil.
• Dimensional, conversion-ready: low-thickness PET slits/die-cuts with clean edges for labels, hinges, panel guards and narrow marks; cleaner than nonwoven/cloth, lower cost than PI volume runs.
• Readable-label protection: clear 850 over barcode/nameplate/manual resists abrasion/chemical without hiding text; better than paper guards and colored tape for “keep-legible” use.
• Linerless general stock: 72yd rolls, 18-month shelf, 16–27°C storage; simpler than linered conversion tape for daily industrial, lighter than specialty high-temp tape.

Applications

• Web splicing/core start: paper/film/label roll butt splicing and core starting; thin PET no machine jam, acrylic durable.
• Web-defect marking: print/coat/slit lines flag defects, bad edges and color deviations with red/black/white; silver reflects photocell counting.
• Sealing/labeling protection: carton/bag/equipment small-box seal; nameplate/barcode/manual outer cover with clear 850 against abrasion/solvent/moisture.
• Label/panel guard: instrument panels, electronic housings, asset tags and warehouse barcodes overlaminated; clear, scratch-resistant PET.
• Decorative edging/tape hinge: sample books, displays, appliance trim and temporary flip covers using narrow 850 edging or PET hinge.
• Silver reflective/film: quality-line photoelectric defect flags, decorative metallic striping and movie/image film splicing (silver).
• Light chemical/transit: lab parts, electronics assembly and aerospace-light-spec chemical-splash/solvent protection with clear 850; not for long heavy chemical.
• Industrial MRO small fix: temporary cable-bundle tagging, part positioning, fixture strips where low thickness must not interfere.
