Product Description

3M 5423 is the thick-version single-coat industrial slip tape in the UHMW-PE family: translucent ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene film backing, one-side rubber PSA and a 60# silicone-treated densified-kraft liner; total ~0.30mm/12mil (backing 0.25mm/10mil, liner 0.09mm/3.5mil). Its UHMW surface gives very low friction plus high abrasion resistance to form a “slip plane/self-lubricating layer” on guide rails, chutes, bins, tanks, spray booths and stretch-form aluminum. It reduces friction, sticking, impact wear and rattle, and replaces grease where oiling would contaminate. It is the heavier-duty alternative to 5421 for tougher sliding/impact-wear service.

• Thick UHMW-PE low friction: coefficient just above PTFE, but 0.30mm backing outwears 5421 for long sliding; rails/chutes self-slide versus commodity PE/PVC/crepe protection.
• Better abrasion than PTFE film: Taber CS-10/1000g 1000 cycles on S-37 no wear-through; UHMW beats PTFE in sliding-wear/impact; thicker gauge than thin UHMW for heavy stock/abrasive drag.
• Self-lubricating, no oil: for food/pharma/print/spray/cleanroom where grease contaminates; non-oily, low dust pickup; cleaner than oil/grease and more durable than duct/paper shield.
• 0.30mm impact-wear gauge: thicker than 5421 (0.17mm) against grain impact, edge knock and chute flow; longer life in hoppers, discharge mouths, booth floors/fixtures and press aluminum.
• Rubber tack plus kraft liner for conversion: steel 180° peel 3.9N/cm for instant set; 60# silicone kraft 0.09mm for clean slitting/kiss-cut/die-cut into slides, discs and chute tiles versus linerless gum.
• Translucent, noise/rattle control: UHMW slick layer between dissimilar metal/plastic cuts squeak/vibration rattle; softer/slicker than hard plastic or metal shim, longer than plain protection film.
• Chemical/low-moisture, industrial temp: broad chemical resistance vs commodity rubber tapes (verify per chemical); low water-vapor transmission for bin/tank liners; long-term −34 to 107°C for cold chutes, ambient lines and warm wash sides.
• Replaces oiled wear parts: oil-free drawer/cabinet/machine ways and packaging guides; dry slip plane instead of metal-on-metal without lubrication.

Applications

• Conveyor guide rails/strips: belt/roller/packaging flat rails lined with 5423 for cartons/bottles/parts low-drag, no scuff.
• Feed/discharge chutes: plastic pellets, grain, hardware parts and trim scrap; anti-stick, less bridging, less rail scoring.
• Bins/tanks/hoppers: totes, small silos and feed hoppers lined UHMW-side for non-stick discharge and easy cleanout.
• Spray booths/fixtures: booth walls, turntables and fixture frames resist overspray and release better than paper protection.
• Stretch/stamp/forming protection: stretch-form and aluminum-sheet press contact faces anti-scratch/slip; stamping/bending wear trials on metal.
• Drawer/cabinet/machine ways: heavy tool cabinets, industrial drawers and equipment slides for light, grease-free travel.
